1) Whats next on your schedule?
Next up is a raw full meet on Feb. 18th. Then I am
looking at Gene Rychlak's meet at the Kumite Classic
in May. Not sure after that.
2) What type equipment/gear are you wearing?
I am sponosored by Inzer, so I only use their gear.
Right now I am using the Black double denim, but I am
starting to experiment with some poly shirts.
3) Who's your biggest rival in the sport?
I wouldn't call anybody in the sport a rival, we are
actually all friends. I guess "Inspiration" would be
a better word. Gene, Ryan, Mendy, Tiny, and Wong all
come to mind real fast.
4) State of the sport right now?
The state of the sport sucks. You have a few really
good people trying to do great stuff, and then you
have a bunch of backstabber's and internet keyboard
warriors talking crap and a few meet directors causing
the sport to get worse. I still enjoy lifting, but
the state of things right now is bad and getting
worse. I think all the bad vibes will eventually
cause sort of an enema to the sport and a lot of the
bad people and bad energy will be gone. But for now,
we have warring federations, arguing lifters, poor
judging, and a general state of unrest that seems to
have been growing for the past couple of years.
5)What supplements (if any) do you use?
I take glucosamine and condroitin, flax oil, fish oil,
calcium, and a multi-vitamin.
6) Favorite lifter all time (dead or alive)?
My all time favorite is Anthony Clark. I pretty much
grew up in the sport reading about him in the late
90's. I really wish I could have had a chance to meet
him.
7) Diet or nutrition changes you make as a meet
gets closer?
What is a diet? The only thing I do different at a
meet is up my carbs and drink a ton of gatorade to
bloat my stomach out. It makes it easier to touch
with the bar. Its also one of the reason people think
I am so enormously fat, when they see me competing I
am really bloated up. I can out 3-4 inches on my
stomach just with bloat.
8 Any regrets in the sport / greatest acheivment
? (one or both if you'd like)
I have lots of regrets. I really should have squatted
and deadlifted earlier in my career, and I definitely
should have been smarter with injury avoidance and
management. My body is pretty beat up now due to some
very poor decisions when I was younger. I should have
(and still should) pay more attention to my nutrition.
And I have had a couple of public "indiscretions"
where I lost my temper that I most definitely regret.
My greatest achievement was my 810 bench press in
2003. That was the first time I put 800+ on a bar in
a meet, and I smoked it. I won the first "big time"
meet I entered. Everything since then has been gravy.
9) What style of training do you follow?
I use Metal Militia bench techniques with a few of my
own tweaks. For squats and deads I just sort of train
instinctively and it is working well so far.
10)Give a blanket statement you would like to be
remembered by.
I guess I would have to go with one of my personal
quotes that I said once and some people have repeated:
You simply cannot stop me--I will win in the end!!!
Or, there is my other favorite:
I've had my head up my own ass for a long time
now. I finally realized it stinks up there!!!---This
is for every time I forget the basics and have to go
back and re-learn to get back on track.
Feel free to thank anyone youd like or give props to
Lots of people I need to thank. Inzer Advanced
designs for the best gear I could ask for. HeadBlade
for supporting me and keeping me looking this damn
good. My wife for helping me along and putting up
with all my crap. My lifting partners Joel, Tone,
Jeff, Mike, Brian, Joe, and Kyle for getting me where
I am. Bill Crawford for teaching me everything I know
about benching. CandyAss and Zane for being a big
part of my lifting career and my adopted brother and
sister. Mike Miller and Nazareth Barbell for letting
me train there. And last, but not least, all of the
other big benchers for giving me soemthing to shoot
for!!
